Many people call Surrey the stock broker belt, due to the large amount of commuters who reside there. The county is split into eleven boroughs and districts, including Elmbridge, Ewell, Guildford, Mole Valley, Reigate and Banstead, Runnymede, Spelthorne, Surrey Heath, Tandridge, Waverley and Woking. Most of the county consists of gorgeous countryside, woodland and a number of pleasant market towns and mills.
There are many reasons to take a trip to Surrey, but we have compiled some of the best and put them into the tourism guide below. Whether you are interested in walking, bike riding, exploring historic sites or even just shopping, we're positive that you will find something to interest you.
Much of Surrey is in the green belt & it's the most wooded county in Great Britain. There are many commons & access lands, in addition to a sizeable network of footpaths & bridleways, which include the North Downs Way - a stunning long-distance path. Because of this, Surrey offers some exciting rural leisure activities, which include bike riding, walking & riding.
Much of the land in the county is flat, although the highest point in Surrey is Leith Hill, which is near Dorking & stands at an amazing 965 ft above sea-level.
If you're planning a day trip for the complete family, take a trip to Chessington World of Adventures or Thorpe Park. These lively theme parks have some fabulous rides, so you're guaranteed to have a fabulous time there. On the other hand, there is the Rural Life Centre in Tilford, which offers a children's playground & miniature railway for younger children, or even Farnham’s busy Birdworld & Underwater World, which gives you the chance to see some beautiful animals.
If you're more interested in looking at historical sites, museums & galleries, you will also find that Surrey has plenty to offer you. Indeed, Surrey has over forty museums and some of our favourites are the Ash Museum, Clandon Park, East Surrey Museum & the Holmesdale Natural History Museum.
Surrey's numerous towns also boast many shopping opportunities that can be taken advantage of. Woking is especially good for retail therapy because it has the Peacock Centre, which contains renowned brands such as Marks & Spencer, Toys R Us & Next. In addition to this, Woking also has Wolsey Place Shopping - yet another shopping mall with renowned brands. There’s also a market placed in Woking's Peacock Walk, which opens Monday to Saturday.
On the other hand, you'll also find Dorking to be an exciting spot for retail therapy. It has St Martin's Walk, which is a new shopping precinct in the centre of town. However, the town centre also remains renowned for its numerous antique shops. Dorking also has a bustling market on Fridays in the car park on St Martin's Walk.
Surrey can be easily reached by road and train from Central London and it is also within simple reach of many other British cities.
