Surrey is a county placed in the south east of England, which helps to make up the Home Counties. Surrey surrounds Greater London, Kent, East Sussex, West Sussex, Hampshire, and Berkshire.
Surrey council sits at Kingston-upon-Thames, although the town has belonged to Greater London since 1965. Because of the county's proximity to London, Surrey has numerous commuter towns and villages, which has made it one of the wealthiest areas in the UK.
Despite the vast number of London commuters in Surrey, it is still a fabulous place to visit for a weekend away or holiday. After all, the county boasts beautiful countryside, fabulous shops, gorgeous market towns & some superb historical sites, so it really offers something for everyone.
If you're looking for an exciting family day trip, you can go to an open day in Busbridge Lakes for a stunning picnic. Alternatively, you can take in the breathtaking scenery located around the striking Chinley Semaphore Tower or even in Outwood, which is home to the oldest working windmill in England. The more adventurous visitor can also consider taking a boat ride down the Wey Navigation or a cycle ride down the Downs Link Path.
In addition to these outdoor pursuits, you'll also be happy to know that the Surrey towns of Leatherhead, Chertsey & Farnham have some exciting museums, including the Ash Museum. For art lovers, there is also the Forge & Dragon galleries or the Wints Picture Galleries, both of which display some impressive work. Alternatively, you can visit the great Hogs Back Brewery in Tongham, which has over 500 types of beer for you to try.
As we have probably already mentioned, Surrey is the most wooded county in England. This is represented by Surrey County Council's symbol, which shows a pair of interlinking oak leaves.
The diverse landscape of the county boasts very old woodlands, acid heaths & gorgeous grasslands. In actual fact, the Surrey Hills, which expand across 1/4 of the county, are so gorgeous that they've been allocated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. This area was created in 1958 & covers from Farnham to Oxted.
Surrey's numerous towns also have many shopping opportunities to take advantage of. Dorking is a fantastic destination for shopping. It boasts St Martin's Walk, which is a brand new shopping precinct in the middle of town. Despite this, the town centre still remains well known for its numerous antique shops. Dorking also because a busy market on Fridays in the car park on St Martin's Walk.
