Sussex is a historic county of England, meaning it has existed for several hundred years and has been used for several different purposes, and thus creates a framework for the modern English government. Sussex has much to offer in terms of food and drink from traditional seaside fare such as jellied eels and fish and chips. There are also annual food festivals including those at Brighton and Horsham. The county offers a diverse selection of restaurants including the very best modern British cuisine at some of the country’s best eating establishments offering local delights such as fish and selsey prawns straight off the local boats. Romsey lamb is amongst the best in the world, and of course, the fine selections of Sussex cheeses, all rounded off with a glass of wine from one of the county’s very own vineyards.
Sussex is a mecca for all kinds of entertainment opportunities to enthrall the visitor; Brighton’s Theatre Royal and Chichester Festival Theatre are well-established venues to rival the West End. There are huge numbers of very traditional country and town pubs, some of which have been welcoming travellers for centuries. You will also find up market wine bars and bistros, as well as sophisticated nightclubs where you can dance the night away. Live music is very much alive and well at multiple venues across the county from the latest up and coming pop band to high quality classical music and opera events.
