There are many different types of vending machines for sale that can provide sizeable profits with very little effort on behalf of the owner. All it takes is good machines with the latest products people will want to purchase, and an operator who is diligent about keeping the machines in good working order and fully stocked. Historically, there have been four different categories of vending machines for sale. These include snack and soda vending machines, as well as mechanical vending machines that sell cups of coffee or packs of cigarettes.

Most people are not as interested in buying mechanical vending machines to sell cigarettes these days for many reasons, either for their own ethical reasons or the simple fact that there are fewer and fewer smokers all the time. Many reports suggest that snack and soda vending machines are really the way to go. In fact, bottled and canned beverages make up 49.5 percent of the market followed by hot beverages such as coffee and hot chocolate at 10 percent and vended food at 7.8 percent. Combination snack and soda vending machines that sell both cold beverages and packages foods are one of the safest bets, because people are more likely to purchase more than one item.

The most important sector where mechanical vending machines are used is the manufacturing sector. This accounts for 41 percent of vending usage, according to the National Automatic Merchandising Association. As a result, most vending manufacturers have their own machines that employees can test for product and service. Having these mechanical vending machines on location provides a great test case for improving the quality. Offices come in second, representing 26 percent of sales, followed by seven percent in the healthcare sector.

With so many different types of vending machines for sale, this is big business. In 1994, for example, the various vending machines for sale grossed about $18 billion, and by 2004 this number had increased to about $30 billion.
