My husband told me that he was a hunter when I first met him. He loves hunting waterfowl, upland birds as well as other game. His dog was a Labrador retriever and he trained him a lot. As we began to date more often I began to learn how to train dogs and found that I have a natural talent of working with animals. We had been dating for several months when he mentioned that he was going to be going deer hunting. I questioned this since deer season was still two months away. He explained to me that he was into archery hunting and that the period began two months earlier than the gun season. I knew about archery hunting, but I never knew a person that was practicing it. I was about to enter into a whole new world of hunting.
I did not see him get ready for hunting during the year we were dating. I just knew that I did not see him as much as I would have liked on the weekends since he was out hunting. I discovered the preparation that goes into bow hunting once we were married. First the the clothes he wear is entirely camouflage. My husband is very insistent that the clothing be washed with no detergents and it needed to hang outside for several days so there would be no household odors on it. The need for this is that with archery hunting you need to get really close to the animal being shot at. Also, he had to practice shooting arrows into a big target that was shaped like a deer. This stage is to get a better accuracy at different distances. He also installed a portable bench in a tree so that he could quietly sit and wish for a deer to walk close enough to be shot. He told me that there (exists|is} a procedure called still hunting in which the hunter is on the ground, but in the early season when there is still many leaves on the trees, the tree stand is a preferred technique of hunting.
I was truly astonished at the amount of time to train and the force that is needed to pull back the strings on the bow. After a few years I have come to admire archery hunting and the persons that do it. It is much more of a sport that utilising a rifle to shoot a deer. The animal has to be close and the shot has to be really defined. My husband has shot several deer as well as two black bears with his bow. Even if is a lot of work and time consuming, it is a sport that he enjoys.
