The question of backing up Skype data for later restoration to a different PC is put quite often, in both home and business environments. A common situation is when a company wants to distribute incoming voicemails between multiple employees and it's critical that all calls are transferred to the appropriate people and everybody's settings are accurate.

Normally, Skype doesn't provide a means for backing up Skype contacts, history, settings and other data. Writing an instruction manual on how to configuring settings for each workstation can work well, but it still requires a lot of efforts and is strongly subject to user mistake. And the risk of somebody specifying incorrect settings (which may cause calls to be answered by inappropriate people) is not worth the trouble.

An obvious solution is to configure Skype settings on one PC and then transfer them to all other machines. While this may seem easy in theory, in practice it's not quite obvious what you should start with and how to do it. Like with most Windows software, simple copying of the Skype installation folder to a new place won't make it work.

Today's market offers multiple tools for backing up Skype data that "know" what exactly need to be backed up (registry keys and other system data) so it can be later restored to a different computer. However, all of them have a number of peculiarities that need to be taken into account:

* Skype can't be backed up and restored when its interface is open and/or its process is running

* Skype plug-ins can't be backed up and restored if Skype's Plugin Manager is running. To disable Plugin Manager, kill the process SkypePM.exe

* Skype plug-ins can't be restored if Skype's Plugin Manage hasn't been run at least once. During the first run, it writes paths to all plug-ins to the system's registry, which is critical information for backup and restoration

* Skype's password are stored in a Protected storage. Protected storage is encrypted with a key which depends on local computer and local user account, which makes it unusable in different conditions. This means that if you want to set up multiple similar Skype accounts on multiple computers, you can use the Skype backup to restore everything, but passwords.

Understanding these simple facts will help you to deal with problems that you may encounter when organizing Skype call distribution in your company with a single Skype backup as template.
