HDD backups are important – we hear it every day, on every corner and from everybody – but take no action. The problem is that the times when you could easily live without backups and hope that hard drive won't fail have passed long ago. Today, when most PCs are internetized, the risk of losing HDD data is high as never before. Thousands of new viruses appear daily, and their number is growing geometrically. Any networked computer may become infected at any time.
Performing regular hard drive backups enables you to recover from hard disk crashes, malware effects, accidental data deletion or other PC disasters. Over time, people have developed two qualitatively different approaches to hard disk drive backup:
* Backing up hard disk via file system drivers. This method suggests that all HDD backups are performed through the use of common file system queries. It is fast and lets you create highly targeted backups (e.g. backup a specific folder like My Documents), but doesn't allow backing up operating system, drive boot records and other data that is locked by the OS or not represented as files.
* Backing up HDD contents on sector level. This is the most complete type of hard disk backup which gives no regard to the file system and backs up HDD on the physical level. It is noticeably slower than files-based disk backup and can't be applied to separate files and folders, but at the same time enables you to back up your system completely. Also, this approach can be used for hard drive cloning.
Today's market offers a variety of hard disk drive backup software. When choosing which will be the best for you, make sure that it supports both approaches and has a rich number of necessary options, such as data compression, encryption, scheduling, and other.
