Football clubs in Hertfordshire vary in their status, with the most popular and high-flying Hertfordshire-based club being Watford FC. As well as football, you cannot travel far in Hertfordshire without finding a golf course and the county is home to more than 50 clubs and courses. Rugby also features well and although Hertfordshire is the smallest county in the London area, it certainly lacks nothing when it comes to its sporting connections.

Football clubs in Hertfordshire

Watford Football Club play their home games at Vicarage Road and have firmly sealed their place in the top two tiers of the English football leagues, currently playing in the Championship with numerous appearances in the Premier League throughout the years. Watford Football Club was founded in 1881 and they have been at Vicarage Road since 1922, where they share the ground with Saracens Rugby Club. The ‘Hornets’ boast a celebrity connection, with Elton John playing a huge part in the ownership of the club in previous years. They play in the traditional colours of red, yellow and black and Vicarage Road has a capacity of just under 20,000. Watford FC continues to claim the top spot as the most popular of the football clubs in Hertfordshire.

As well as Watford FC, Arsenal reserves and Arsenal ladies both play their matches at Borehamwood Football Club. Arsenal’s training ground is located just south of St Albans in an area called Shenley and the state-of-the-art facility is home to massage baths, gymnasiums, hydro-therapy pools and indoor and outdoor pitches. Football clubs in Hertfordshire that pay their games in non-league include Stevenage Borough, Hitchin Town and St Albans City and just outside of Hertfordshire is Luton Football Club, who play their home games at Kenilworth Road. Barnet Football Club is also located just outside of the Hertfordshire border and both teams welcome high levels of support throughout the county.

Golfing connections

The county boasts more than 50 golf clubs and it is hard to travel anywhere without bumping into a golf course, making it one of the most popular Hertfordshire sports. Brockett Hall and Hanbury Manor are home to two of the most beautiful courses, which are kept immaculately well. Stevenage and Welwyn Garden City have good public courses and Nick Faldo actually learnt his skills from playing on the fairways in Welwyn Garden City. St Albans is famous for its golfing connections as it was home to the man who gave his name to the now eminent Ryder Cup; named in recognition of local Sam Ryder.

Rugby League in Hertfordshire

Hertfordshire sports are not only confined to football and golf, as rugby is also popular with local residents. Saracens Rugby Football Club share Vicarage Road with Watford FC and they are based in St Albans. They play their games in the top flight of domestic Rugby Union, the Guinness Premiership, and they were established in 1876. Saracens RFC compete in black and red and they compete in the LV Cup as well as rugby cup matches throughout Europe.

As well as the most obvious Hertfordshire sports there are also plenty of opportunities for youths throughout the county to join local teams. Tennis and badminton courts are widely available at local leisure centres and swimming pools and bowling greens are also easy to find.
